Nintend still sucks at advertising - Christmas Ed.

Journal Entry: Thu Nov 28, 2013, 7:32 PM

So apparently, other than the 3ds, Nintendo is failing hard in the US for sales on the WiiU and its games. Well I just saw their big announcement advertisement for the Christmas 2013 shopping season and it BLOWS! Talk about utter failure to capitalize on existing good games for both systems. I had to check to make sure half those WiiU games had even been released as the last I'd heard was spring 2014, like all the other delayed games. And not a single one of those WiiU games were system sellers. You might be able to make a case for Pikmin 3 or Windwaker but both of those games have a really niche audience and the rabid Pikmin fans had already bought the system at launch expecting it to be there, but it was another delayed until sometime in 2013 game just like Rayman. There's just nothing there for anyone.

As for the 3ds, if I hadn't already bought the 3ds and been collecting all the awesome games on it like, I might look at this ad and skip the system entirely! I mean come the fuck on, really? This is the best you can do to Nintendo of America? Even if you limit this dangling tile list to only released this year, you'll find a ton more interesting and better selling games than what we see here. Certainly more buzz and excitement was to be found for ProjectXZone, the Professor Layton and Phoenix Wright puzzle series, the sweet games from Atlus and Intelligent Systems like Code of Princess, Etrian Odyssey 4 and Millennium Girl, Fire Emblem Awakening, the no less than THREE Shin Megami Tensei games (IV, Soul Hackers, and Devil Survivor Overclocked), and the Tales of the Abyss remake.

I just feel that there's such a huge wasted opportunity here. I really think that most of the upper tier NoA management needs to be outright fired for this. I hate, no loath, advertising in all of its forms, so from me, this is a big deal that even I notice this complete failure to connect with any audience. I don't mind it when I don't get it, but when it feels like no one is even paying attention, its a problem.

So take a look at their Christmas Advert for Black Friday and tell me what you think. Leave comments below.

let's not forget the whole swapnote and flipnote studio 3d thing... especially flipnote... GAAAH I FUCKING HATE NINTENDO -.- and only a few good games too? They can't just delay everything and expect their audience to still be as big.. in ten years no one is going to know who they are anymore because they get worse... and worse.. and WORSE!!! >:[

I just got the new update with the miiverse and in the user guide of forbidden things are things like sharing friend codes and sending private messages. To which I have to ask, what the fuck is the point then? I just don't understand how they expect people to play multiplayer games over the internet when the client software doesn't search like in most of ATLUS games or Animal Crossing? Or arrange meetups online? Or fucking anything?

And so many other great games from this year alone aren't on it either. Such a shame. And I don't buy the whole "its mostly 1st party titles" thing either. If you're going to put mostly first party or a mix, at least put the good ones on the ad.

"1st party titles" refers to distance from the manufacturer of the hardware. So first party titles are made by the same company or under the same publishing umbrella as the manufacturer. In this case Nintendo made or hired a team under them to make an exclusive title for their 3DS or WiiU. Most of the Mario titles are 1st party. 3rd party are other publishers not associated or owned by Nintendo. Like Ubisoft.

Did you enjoy it at all? I tried it and couldn't beat the demo monsters they threw at you without any tutorial on how to fight.

.... I see nothing wrong.... but then again I don't really care for ads. If people wanna rely on a petty thing like advertisement let them, then rub in their faces on how awesome the tablet and duo screen really are and say ads are are like cake, they lie, and problem solved :B
or just say don't mock it till you try it (or how ever that saying goes)
But yeah I see yer point.just don't let it get to you, as long as they sell anywhere else everything should be fine, right?

sorry if I don't make sense, but it near the holidays, be happy this stuff exists, don't let bad things get you down.

I don't think anyone "relies" on advertisements, nor does anyone care for them. Advertisements are there to alert you the the existence of an item or service and to encourage you to purchase it.

I pay attention to advertisements because I want to know what the narrative is that's being presented/shoved down my throat. I studied advertising briefly in college and the fun fact is that its all targeted, well studied, and crafted to do something. And one of the fun things I took away from that class was the knowledge that if you want to know what the fuck is going on, follow the money, and find who is being targeted with what message. Now politics and economic debates aside, I've found Nintendo's advertising to be lacking in just about every way from a lack of focus, content, message, and delivery. And even though I loath advertising in all of its forms, my understanding won't go away. This means that for almost every single other company, movement, political party, etc I am in an active state of avoidance. However, I've not even noticed Nintendo even from word of mouth/social media (except for all the WiiU sucks and has failed videos on youtube that crop up on my gaming subs). This is bizarre in so many ways, and caused me to sit down and analyze this phenomenon. I realized that I couldn't even remember an advertisement from Nintendo that I hadn't sought out deliberately. For example, I subscribe to Atlus' Newsletter to find out what games are being released and when. I happen to really like their games, which are spread out across the different ecosystems. And about the only time I hear from or about Nintendo is when they release another 3ds title. And yet I never see Nintendo promote Atlus' games on their main adverts, despite their popularity. And it just boggles my mind. Nintendo is just so forgettable to both myself (a heavy 3ds user), and all of my friends. All of them know of and have at least tried one of the Persona games or Shin Megami Tensei (insert title here), but those were mostly Sony releases from the PS2 era.

So the point of all this is, I believe that Nintendo is out of the public consciousness as a direct result of effective advertising. And what little I do see, as the ad from their own website shows, only accentuates the belief that there are no good games for the WiiU and even gives a false impression that the 3ds lineup is weak.

Why would Nintendo advertise Atlus' games when it's their own that are the system's selling point? Mario Kart probably has a wider audience than any other game on the system, for example. Nintendo games are likely the only reason their systems are still selling (I'm only in it for Pokemon, which isn't exclusively owned by Nintendo but is a company-exclusive series). Exclusives, as well, are very important for sales. On top of that, advertising their own games gets Nintendo more money. Of course you've got some others like Assassin's Creed and all that, which are provided to give the impression "hey, we're just as good as the competitors!".

Because most of the games listed up there aren't first party titles.

The majority of them are, actually. 19/30. I'm pretty sure most people are more interested in Assassin's Creed and Batman than anything Atlus has to offer, as well. I like Atlus' games, don't get me wrong, but there's no denying that these other titles have larger fanbases.

It means advertisements don't exist because you think some people like them. Really, no one likes advertisements. But it does generate sales, which is good for the advertiser.

Have you ever seen one of those cheesy infomercials? They're selling horrible products and doing a poor job of advertising. Yet, people buy them! Advertising isn't free, and if they were losing money, they would pull the ad. But they don't, so they must be making more money that the ad cost to create and display.

I don't see anything wrong with this ad. It's displaying popular game franchises because these are the ones that have gotten the most sales. I don't think this ad will actually harm Nintendo at all. I still want a 3DS.

I go out of my way to ignore adverts, so its not like its impacting me directly. I got a link to Nintendo's sale advert site through a podcast explaining just how bad/non-existent the advertising for Nintendo is in the US. And after checking it out for curiosity's sake, I'm absolutely dumbfounded at how completely out of touch with consumers whoever is running the marketing department for NoA. Granted the 3ds side is poor, but at least has a few good games on it (though counting pokemon X and Y as two different games is stupid filler). But the WiiU side just accentuates just how bad the release schedule has been for that system.

yeah... but hay if the people want to judge them by there ads, then it's their fault, ya know?
DS and WiiU are both fun, if they wanna miss out then yeah, again as long as they sell everywhere else, they should be fine right? :) there are a lot of youtubers that uses them and they enjoy them to the fullest.
Nintendo buildings are everywhere and advertize differently.
though I do see your point, But it also feels like it was on purpose to make the game systems look bad, but you never know, they could had been lazy as well.
(plus Y and X ARE seperate games do to slightly different settings like exclusives and stuff)
