omgsotired. working sucks.
made some friends out of co-workers and at local game store. playing Legend of the Five Rings TCG. Like the game, and get to play Magic during lunch.
never played L5R, but like the game overall as its got more strategy than Magic. owned by the same company though, but I like how AEG runs their license. bought four starters for the myself and to show the guys at work as the LGS doesn't support the game officially yet and its hard to get more stock in something about it being sold out in distribution or something. bought crab, unicorn, mantis and phoenix. love the crab, and kinda the unicorn (mostly the story of both), haven't tried playing mantis yet, and ended up selling the phoenix to one of my co-workers after he just offered to buy it from me.
All experiences using virgin starter decks with no modifications. we're holding off until a few games to see how they play.
crab, giant beat stick and scouts that kick ass. - very fun, and much my magic style of beefy monsters go boom.
unicorn, UNICORNNNNNn! sorry, TLU ref. cool art, neat characters, alpha-strike deck that seems to stall hard when played by less aggressive players. you have to attack immediately or you won't survive. If the opponent changes the tempo you stall out and end up fighting a stalemate over last provinces or two. Lion player with virgin deck (got himself one) is pretty aggressive and he just stalls the crap out of my co-worker.
Lion-not mine, so honor military in virgin format. seems weak against the mantis ranged deck and crab.
Mantis, haven't played it yet myself but the deck appears to be a tactician/scout/naval invasion with mass ranged alpha-strike deck. really want to try it next.
Phoenix, out of the box, they deck seems very weak. It lacks the focus of the crab and unicorn. it might do better in the hands of someone like me that plays very aggressively and the trickiness will shine. my co-worker needs more practice, but he does tend to sit back and wait. this virgin deck doesn't work well as a defensive deck. maybe as a defensive honor/dishonor deck, but that's not supported in the starter deck. my other friend plays a very spell heavy version that's super tweaked out and its not fun playing against him and his crane deck either. Its like playing solitaire and he just stalls you until you quit the game yourself.
Crane - not mine, weeeeeeaksause. fuck you duels. go take your mini-games somewhere else. and aggressive military wrecks face anyway against it. I donno, but the idea that I have to spend ages playing flip four just to finish my combat and his combat phase is just boring. if it were faster or were like the ranged/melee attacks then it would be more interesting. If you ask me duellist and duelling should act more like first strike or double strike so that you play a battle action and either double the force, or attack twice, or use the chi value as force, or just simply melee strike to pick off my guys. i mean come on, really? its not like the dude isn't going to stack the fate deck with 4's and 5's. what's the point of the mini-game if there isn't a chance of losing? I basically use duelling to force the crane player to deck himself. oh noes, my zero honor crab berserkers are dishonored. what ever shall i do...how will i go on? you bowed, dishonored, and/or killed one or two of my half-dozen or so 8+ force brutes that won't die until end of turn. enjoy your loss.
Oh and one more thing, crane can suck my nuts. playing against that deck is so god damn boring. I have rarely wanted to physically assault someone so hard, until now.
